Conserving Energy at Home

Energy efficiency areas in a home

A ATTIC: Ensure that the attic is properly insulated as heat can easily escape.
B BATHROOM: Install a high-efficiency showerhead, consider a six-litre or dual-flush toilet and use faucet aerators for the sink.
C KITCHEN: ENERGYSTAR® appliances save significant costs in the long-term. Use a lid when cooking on the stove to speed up the process.
D LIVING ROOM: Use energy efficient lighting and plug your entertainment centre into a power bar so you can turn everything off when not in use.
E BASEMENT: Only heat/cool the rooms that are in use and be sure to turn off the lights when you leave the room.
F GARDEN: Trees on the south side of your home reduce cooling costs by blocking the sun in the summer. Plant native species in the garden that require less water and fertilizers and consider installing a rain barrel to collect water for the grass and garden.

Retrofit Returns

  • Caulking/weather stripping doors and windows can reduce home energy costs by up to 10 per cent.
  • Ten inches of insulation can reduce your home's energy use by about 25 per cent.
  • If your furnace is over ten years old, it's probably 55 per cent efficient and you are losing 45 cents of every heating dollar you spend. Newer high-efficiency natural gas furnaces are up to 96 per cent efficient and nearly all the energy goes to heating your home.
