Community Success Story: smartliving St. Lawrence
Community Initiatives: Bringing Solar to a Neighbourhood Near You
There are a growing number of
community solar initiatives taking
root in Toronto. From the pioneering
work of Ron McKay in
Riverdale to the up and coming
projects of the West Toronto Solar
Initiative, residents are banding
together to share experiences and
to secure the best opportunities for
their communities to adopt renewable
energies.

smartliving St. Lawrence (slSL) kicked off 2007 with a
successful building-to-building energy efficiency campaign
in Toronto's St. Lawrence neighbourhood.
Hundreds of residents, including board members and
property managers, learned about energy conservation
strategies by attending one of 20 workshops
delivered since January. Through this campaign, slSL
registered over 1800 conservation pledges and distributed
2500 energy-efficient light bulbs and 1200
high efficiency showerheads to reduce greenhouse
gas emission by 139 tonnes.
"We are reaching out to condo and co-op residents
to help them reduce their energy and water
bills," said Ben Marans, slSL Project Coordinator.
"From providing simple tips for individual savings to
establishing conservation committees to address
building-wide initiatives, we are helping residents to
save money and reduce their environmental impact."
