A Discussion Paper on Green Convergence
Every one of us is ecologically significant.
Our thoughts, feelings and physical sensations, which give us a
sense of identity, are all based on our interactions with the Earth
and other people. If our social, physical, environmental and spiritual
interactions are seen as circles radiating out from each individual,
they all intersect at the point that we call the self. And since
these circles reach out to touch the people and the Earth around
us, our own personal environment is part of all those things. Each
affects the other.
From "Keepers of the Earth" by Michael Caduto and Joseph Bruchac
There exists a void in our community - a public
space, developed and maintained within an ecosystem perspective.
This space is dedicated to the transformation of society and business
to sustainable practices. Through a variety of activities, this
space of Green Convergence is where business, the arts and
recreation will converge and, together, move towards sustainability.
There is a large demand for Green Convergence.
Citizens are becoming increasingly aware; communities have spent
countless hours participating in committees, conferences, city councils,
workshops, lawsuits and protests that focus on environmentally charge
issues and solutions. Many people realize the need to carry out
business and daily activities sustainably, but lack the proper context.
Green Convergence will accelerate
the mission of a sustainable Toronto in a bioregional context; to
be "subversive" to promote sustainable policies; to create an ever-widening
circle of community renewal and growth; to demonstrate a new mainstream
societal model (i.e. beyond the grassroots); to inspire corporations
to reinvest in natural capital.
Green Convergence is meant to cater
to the public that seeks the context for informing themselves and
allowing them recreate sustainably. Green Convergence will
also provide a space for activities with broad-base appeal, thereby
increasing participation in sustainability. Imagine the selection
of people that could be reached by holding various events such as
concerts, screenings, art installations etc. in a space that is
powered by a mixture of alternative energies, is accessible by public
transit, and created and operated with regard for the land.
Green Convergence will be a multi-purposeful
space that will attract a large variety of people through its programs
all the while show-casing ecologically sensitive practices. Ultimately,
it is an environmental marketing tool. It will provide showcase
opportunities for green marketplace, NGO fora, sustainability workshops,
and satellite campus for colleges and universities.

"Plant a NEW Truffula Tree. Treat it
with care. Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air. Grow a forest.
Protect it from axes that hack. Then the Lorax and all of his friends
may come back."
