2. FEATURE: SAVE WITH ENERGY STAR
Energy-consuming devices are an integral part of our daily lives. There is little that you
can do in your home that doesn't involve one of these devices - refrigerators, washers, light
bulbs … the list goes on.
It makes sense that these
also play an important role in your utility bills - some (like your refrigerator) more so than others (like your toaster).
ENERGY STAR is an
initiative administered by the Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency - one that is can lead to
significant savings over the lifetime of your new purchase.
You may have already seen the ENERGY STAR label or symbol on your appliances at
home:

Click here to visit the ENERGY
STAR website.
But do you know what it means? Any product or piece of equipment that
displays the ENERGY STAR symbol means that it is a top energy performer and meets
stringent specifications for energy consumption.
It's estimated that products displaying the ENERGY STAR symbol can
help reduce energy and operating costs by 30 to 50 percent.
For example, over its lifetime a non-qualified, top-loading washing machine
can cost you more than $1200.00. A similar capacity, ENERGY STAR qualified
front-loading machine would cost approximately $385 over its lifetime - a
savings of more than $800.00. And not only will you save on energy costs
but you can expect savings in water and detergents as well.
EnerGuide and ENERGY STAR: A winning combination
EnerGuide is another program administered by Natural Resources Canada's Office of
Energy Efficiency. The EnerGuide sticker on your appliance tells you how much energy
that appliance consumes per year (for electrical appliances - download the "Your Guide to
EnerGuide" fact sheet from the Resources section of our website - www.eneract.org for more information). When you
see the ENERGY STAR symbol with the EnerGuide label, you can expect to save money on
your energy bills.

3. EnerACT's Green Convergence PROJECT IS ROLLING!
Green Convergence is an exciting project whose goal is to create a state of
the art green building that will be used as a community/business centre. EnerACT
has recently received a grant from the Toronto Atmospheric Fund
to produce a business plan for the project. This is an exciting opportunity to build momentum and
bring more funding to the project.
With your help, we can make Green Convergence a reality. If you haven't already, please sign the Green Convergence petition - just follow the Green Convergence links from our homepage: www.eneract.org.
It is important to show that people want such a space.
For more information, please contact EnerACT's Green Convergence Coordinator -
Bridget Haworth - at greenconvergence@eneract.org or 416-488-3966.
4. REPORT CALLLS FOR AGGRESSIVE UTILITY CONSERVATION MEASURES
On January 28, 2004 Pollution Probe, EnerACT (as a member of the Green Energy Coalition)
and a coalition of environmental organizations and energy companies released a report,
Making Everyone a Winner, calling on the Ontario Energy Board to link the profits of
Ontario's electric utilities (e.g., Hydro One, Hydro Ottawa, London Hydro, Toronto Hydro) to their
success at reducing their customers' bills by making them more energy efficient.
According to the report, linking the utilities' profits to their success at promoting conservation
will create a quadruple win for Ontario, namely:
- Lower electricity bills;
- Reduce risks of blackouts and brownouts;
- Reduce air pollution from coal-fired power plants; and
- Higher profits for Ontario's electric utilities.

5. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - ELLEN WEI YI
Over the last year, Ellen Wei Yi has been one of the most dedicated EnerACT
volunteers, offering her skills in translation and connections to the Chinese community
in moving EnerACT's diversity outreach initiatives forward.
Ellen moved to Toronto from Shanghai early last year. She is
an employment counselor at the Centre for Information and
Community Services, assisting newcomers to Canada during their
journey of seeking employment. She works to encourage,
support and inspire: to bring the very best out of people.
According to Ellen, "I enjoy meeting different people of diverse
backgrounds, and sharing their perspectives of this world."
"It was EnerACT's Diversity Outreach Initiative that attracted me.
I'm a firm believer that no public education activities can
be a real success if they are isolated from the audience's
cultural context. I'm happy to be a part of a program that
addresses people's concerns with consideration of their
cultural background."
We thank you, Ellen. Your hard work and dedication has indeed
proved to be an inspiration and we look forward to working with
you in the future.
